Environment Maryland

 Goals

Our overarching goal is to restore the Chesapeake Bay by increasing land and water protection and restoration, expanding the capacity of other organizations to do this work, engaging citizens in this work, and transforming systems that impede progress.

We support organizations serving the state of Maryland, with local work funded in Baltimore City, Baltimore County, and the six counties of the mid and upper Eastern Shore.

Our work in Maryland has three goals - improving water quality, conserving land, strengthening citizen advocacy.

Goal 1

Improve water quality by reducing pollution
To meet this goal we support:

  1. Efforts to improve enforcement of clean water laws and increase voluntary reduction of pollution

Goal 2

Conserve land by reducing and preventing pollution, by encouraging less polluting farming practices, by protecting and restoring environmentally sensitive land, and by encouraging redevelopment of urban areas
To meet this goal we support:

  1. Efforts to protect, conserve, and restore lands that affect water quality
  2. Efforts to increase adoption of sustainable farming methods
  3. Efforts to prevent or reduce the impact of environmentally damaging projects
  4. Initiatives to improve the quality of life in urban, rural, and suburban areas through environmental restoration/engagement

Goal 3

Strengthen citizen advocacy by engaging people in watershed-level work and issues that impact water quality
To meet this goal we support:

  1. Education and engagement of citizens in Chesapeake Bay advocacy and related environmental issues
  2. Initiatives to build the capacity of nonprofit organizations working on the environment
